What a way to win. Exeter score in the final play to steal the victory away from Hartpury in Round 2 of BUCS Super Rugby.
Exeter took control in the early exchanges, taking the lead under 10 minutes in. Josh Mann was too powerful to stop from short range after the rest of the pack had tirelessly battered away.
The hosts were quick to respond though as Casey Williams levelled the scores. The maul seemed to be dealt with, but it began to split and Williams seized his chance, racing through and scoring.
Exeter were back in front just a few minutes later as Lilley was caught high and Ben Coen knocked over the resulting penalty.
Not wanting the game to get away from them, Williams and Hartpury replied quick. Exeter were slow to fold round, and the hooker spotted this. He picked from the base of the ruck, catching the boys in green off guard and reaching over the line.
Hartpury were now ahead after an action packed first 30 minutes.
The first half wasn’t done yet either. Through a clever set play which saw Kane James pop to Louie Gulley from a penalty. The hooker found a weak shoulder and with the support of both his props drove over the line to continue his impressive try scoring record in green.
HALF TIME SCORE: HARTPURY UNIVERSITY 12 – 17 EXETER UNIVERSITY
After the break Hartpury came out like a team possessed. Dominating in attack, forcing Exeter back into their own 22.
However, chance after chance went begging as they just couldn’t get the ball down over the line. Some heroic Exeter defence holding it up on 2 occasions.
Eventually the boys in green couldn’t hold on any longer. Williams had his hat trick from the back of a maul and suddenly the side in red had the advantage.
Both sides would have opportunities to put their foot down but neither would be able to convert.
Exeter would be the side to blink first, conceding a couple of penalties inside their own half, allowing Kieran Cullen chances at goal. He got both kicks and Exeter needed a miracle heading into the final 5 minutes.
The forwards continued to plug away as the clock ticked into red. The break came from MacAndrew who got the boys to the line and disorganised the defence.
After Bailey and Driscoll were denied from the base, captain Dorrell set himself slightly wider, away from the ruck.
Receiving a pop pass from Brooke, he got on the outside of a couple of defenders, riding the tackles and powering over. Cue Exeter celebrations.
It would all rest on Ben Coen. The conversion from dead in front would be easy on any other day, but under this amount of pressure it was anything but.
The England under-20 international steadied himself and nailed it. Never in doubt.
