After leading a successful return to the Women’s National League, Ti Sharp has graduated and handed the club captaincy reigns over to fullback Anna Birkett.
Having represented Hong Kong 7s at the highest level, Anna came to EURFC last year to try her trade in the 15s game and impressed immediately. She played in 4 games as we reached the final, including the incredible victory away against Edinburgh in the semi-final.
Now head of committee, Birkett has high hopes for the club this season, both on and off the pitch as we look to go one step further than last year.
The prime focus for her and the club is inclusivity across all three teams.
“I want to create an environment that to everyone”, she explained. “Whether you want to have a runabout and meet new people, or become a semi-pro/pro player, I want this club to be a fun, safe space for all”.
With the club having expanded last season to include Exeter Athletic, this message is more important than ever. With so many different levels players can join, the club is thriving in every direction.
With the first game of the season just around the corner, the girls have been working hard in pre-season to perfect their systems and moves in time.
“Pre-season has been going really well. It’s nice to have a mix of 1s, 2s, and Athletic players all coming together to prepare for the season ahead.”
However, it hasn’t just been on the pitch where gains have been made, but also the friendships and bonds have grown significantly. This includes a team weekend trip down to St Ives.
“We have over 60 girls, including 16 freshers, involved in our 6-week pre-season which has been great for team bonding, building upon the strong foundation we created last season, and learning about ourselves and each other”.
With the unbelieve turnout in pre-season, it shows the strength in depth EURFC has. Although not all will be selected, Birkett is insistent that no matter on selection the club is stronger for these incredible numbers.
“This club is so much more than the 23 players that run out for the 1XV each week. Last season we showed how much depth our club has through our success in all competitions. What makes our club special though is that we pride ourselves on being good people and behind the scenes we really are a big group of friends.”
For herself personally, Birkett is looking to build on a successful first season on the pitch. But also, prioritizing her own health allowing her to achieve the best possible results in her playing.
“Outside of working with the club and committee, I would like to perform to the best of my ability on the pitch. I also want to make sure I am giving myself enough downtime so I can put as much energy as possible into my sport and other life goals.”
