In just under a week’s time, EURFC Men and Women will face the ultimate test in the BUCS National Championships finals at StoneX Stadium.
A year on from a famous night at Sixways, EURFC Men will meet university rivals Loughborough as they go in search of back-to-back cup triumphs having secured a stunning 14-13 victory over Durham last season.
After a somewhat inauspicious start to the season, EURFC fought back, to come within a point of securing the BUCS Super Rugby title, falling just short of Loughborough in the final chase.
EURFC Men’s will be hunting for a fourth BUCS title, having previously secured victory in 2001, 2016 and 2022. They will also be looking to become the first EURFC side to secure back-to-back cup triumphs.
As far as the league is concerned, it’s one apiece between Exeter and Loughborough this season, with the African Violet securing victory at Epinal Way early in the season, before Exeter responded emphatically before Christmas to breathe new life into the title race with a bonus-point victory on the Rubber Crumb.
It will be an historic evening for EURFC too, with the women’s side taking on Hartpury and appearing in the final for the first time since 2019.
It’s been some return to life in the BUCS National League for EURFC, having finished third in the league and secured knockout victories over Durham and Edinburgh to reach the hallowed BUCS finals.
Wednesday will mark the first time that EURFC Men’s and Women’s have appeared in the season-ending finals in the same year and regardless of the result, it’s set to be an evening to celebrate the success and strength of rugby in Exeter.
Regardless of the results, Exeter as a rugby institution, continues to be in rude health.
